Introducing the Victorian circa

Victorian properties underwent several architectural phases so it is important to understand which circa your house falls into when undertaking a Victorian property renovation.

Windows were a key focus in Victorian properties, and included sliding slash windows with large panes of glass as well as the arrival of plate glass. Roofs were most likely Welsh slate tiles while lime mortar and lime render were still used for the exterior of properties.

Full interior design and decorating service

From an interior design point of view, it can be hugely satisfying to undertake a Victorian home renovation project. Lime was still used in plasterwork and dado rails became fashionable in the middle of the century, popular in hallways and bathrooms to prevent plasterwork from being scuffed by chairs and traffic. Wallpaper was the furnishing of choice while carpentry and joinery work directly reflected the status of the household.

At Property Conservation Co, we employ skilled craftsmen to carry out our Victorian home renovations. When carrying out a Victorian house restoration, we always try to salvage original materials or use traditional materials that match existing features. Whether that’s repairing roofs using original slate tiles salvaged from the existing roof, using lime render or lime plaster on walls, restoring Victorian staircases and woodwork or remodeling dado rails and other plasterwork, our experts can do it.

We also offer a full interior design and decorating service, helping you to choose the right wallpaper and colour scheme for your Victorian property restoration project.
